In Pathfinder you can assign individual tags to components and ports to precisely depict your network. Tags are structured in root groups and optionally subgroups.
Access the tag system by clicking the tag icon (1) in the sidebar.
Here you will find the active root group at the top (2). Below that the subgroups and tags are listed (3). To switch to a different root group, just click it (4). Use + and More (5) to add additional groups or tags.
You can also assign VLANs to components and ports in a broadly similar process.
You can add a new root group via More→Root group→Add. If you want to add a new subgroup select +→Add group.
Enter a name and a description and choose a color. By default a subgroup inherits the belonging root group's color.
Click Ok to create the group.
You can add a new tags via +→Add tag. If you select a group via click first, the tag will be created within it.
Enter a name and a description and choose a color. By default a tag inherits the belonging group's color.
Click Ok to create the tag.
There are two possibilities to assign tags to components and ports.
To access the first, right click the component (1) and select Properties.
Click Tags (2) in the opening dialog. This opens the component's tag management.
Here you can assign tags to the component (3) and its ports (4). To do the latter first select the desired port.
After clicking Add tag... select a tag and assign it to the component or port by clicking Ok.
The second possibility is assigning tags via drag&drop.
Double click a component to enter its front view and drag a tag from the sidebar's tag section (1) to the component (2) or one of its ports to assign it.
You can also access the tag management in the front view (right click→Manage tags).
When tagging ports you can decide, whether they should only be assigned locally (O), or inherited along the network path (X). To change this setting, just click the symbol.
Further information on tag inheritance can be found here.
You can find a list of all ports and components a tag is assigned to in its properties.
Examples for useful tags are:
- Phone numbers, e.g. to provide easy reachability to the responsible employee.
- Services, like operating systems or databases installed on a component.
- Administrative instructions, to easily plan changes in your network
- Subnets and IP addresses for easy access.
Of course you can create individual tags to further individualize your network.
