Measurements like width and height of components are described in geometries in order to define uniform measurements. This ensures that components and their slots  (e.g. a PCI card and the corresponding PCI slot) have the same measurements and are compatible to each other.

These are typical examples of geometries:

  • 19 inch
  • PCI slot
  • SFP
  • 2,5 inch drive etc.

Some geometries you will hardly need to create because they are automatically updated from the online catalog. If you need to create a geometry, the function "manage geometries" starts a wizard that lists all geometry types currently present in your Pathfinder installation.

Use this wizard to:

  • create new geometry types
  • import geometry types from the online catalog
  • edit existing geometry types
  • delete geometry types

Please note: Components can only be built into slots if they have identical geometries. This means the GBIC slot needs to have the same measurements as the GBIC itself. Geometries that are allocated to existing component definitions cannot be deleted or changed.

The online catalog provides varius standard geometries and conventional measurements like 19 inch, floppy disk drive and PCI slot. Please use the online catalog to avoid inconsistencies and data duplication.
