The function "manage port types" starts a wizard that lists all port types currently present in your Pathfinder installation.
Use this wizard to:
- create new port types
- import port types from the online catalog
- edit existing port types
- delete port types

Using the respective icons you can add new port types, delete exiting port types and import port types from the online catalog (1). To edit an existing port type, double click on it. Right click on a port type and select the action from the context menu to display all component definitions using that port type.
Moreover, Pathfinder helps you to check the precision fit (between two or more ports through a cable), e.g. it will not be possible to connect two RJ45 sockets with a USB cable because the port types are not compatible

Port types currently in use with any component definitions will appear in italics. In Pathfinder, network paths are drawn from port to port.
Importing pre-defined port types from the online catalog makes your network documentation easier. Please use the online catalog to avoid inconsistencies and data duplication.
Auf der ersten Seite werden alle dem System bekannten Porttypen aufgelistet. Dabei werden jene Porttypen, die derzeit durch keine der in Pathfinder vorhandenen Komponentendefinitionen verwendet werden, in kursiver Darstellung aufgeführt. Die Liste der Komponentendefinitionen, die einen gegebenen Porttypen verwenden, erhalten Sie, indem Sie mittels eines Rechtsklicks auf einen der Einträge in dem erscheinenden Popup-Menü den Menüpunkt "Zeige Komponentendefinitionen, die diesen Porttyp benutzen" auswählen.
Im unteren Bereich der Seite finden Sie die Möglichkeit, neue Porttypen zu erstellen, zu importieren, zu löschen oder den ausgewählten Porttypen zu bearbeiten. Porttypen können nur gelöscht werden, wenn Sie durch keine in Pathfinder vorhandene Komponentendefinition verwendet werden. Wollen Sie einen solchen Porttypen löschen, müssen Sie zunächst die Komponentendefinition entfernen.
On the first page, all port types known to the system are listed. The ones which are currently not being used by any component definition in Pathfinder are shown in italic. You can get a list of the component definitions which are currently being used by component definitions in Pathfinder, by right clicking on "show component definitions that use this port type" on one of the entries in the pop-up-menu.
In the lower part you find the option to create new port types, as well as import, delete or edit existing ones. Port types can only be deleted, if they are not in use by any component definition present in Pathfinder. If you wish to delete anysuch port type, please remove the component definition first.
Manage port types
New port types ca be imported from the Pathfinder online catalog. Before creating new port types, please check the catalog for existing ones. To import a port type, select one and and click on "import". After succesfully importing a new port type, the list will be updated.
Import port types
Creating new port types takes two steps: On the first page, you enter basic information of the new port type to be created. The combo-box "template" offers you a choice of images based on a number of standardized graphics included in Pathfinder. Click "next" in order to define the "mapping" of the port type on the next page. "Port type mapping" defines which port types will be interconnected. This connection is utilized for patching and laying cables to help you choose the right cable. Click "finish" to save your changes.

Editing port types is very similar to creating new ones. To avoid accidental changes, click on "edit" first and verify the following dialog. Now you can edit and supplement basic port data on the right hand side. Click "next" to go on to make changes to the port type mapping. Save your changes with "finish".
In the manage port types dialog window. Right click on a port type from the list and select the show component definitions using this port type option from the context menu.
A new dialog window will open to display all available component definitions in your local catalog for that selected port type.
You can then double click on any of those component definitions to view it in details from within the local catalog.

To edit an existing port type, double click on the port type to open it and click on Change (1).
When creating or editing a port type you can fill in the following information:
Name: Assign a name to the port type.
Gender: Assign a gender to the port type. Female (Socket), Male (Plug) or Hermaphrodite.
Pin Count: Assign the number of connection pins in the port.
Width: Assign the width dimension for the port type.
Height: Assign the height dimension for the port type.
Template: Assign an image to the port type from the available list.
Visible: Turn on/off the visibility of port type in drop down menus.
Description: Write a short description of the port type.
Click on Next to move to the next window.

In this window you can define the mapping of the port type.
You can choose which port types (2) the newly created port type can be connected to. The mapping is utilized for patch cables and line cables to ensure only compatible ports are connected.
Click Finish to save your changes.
Editing and creating a port type is done in similar ways. Before creating new port types, please check, if they already exist.
Import Port Types
New port types can be imported from the online catalog.
Select the port types you need and click on Import.
Port types already existing in your local catalog will appear greyed out.
Once the importing is complete, the port type list is updated.
Click on Import to import the selected port types into your local catalog.
Show Related Component Definitions
In the manage port types dialog window. Right click on a port type from the list and select the show component definitions using this port type option from the context menu.
A new dialog window will open to display all available component definitions in your local catalog for that selected port type.
You can then double click on any of those component definitions to view it in details from within the local catalog.
